Uganda Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale

In Uganda’s first national participation at the Venice Biennale, two artists from Kampala, Acaye Kerunen and Collin Sekajugo, present their work in an exhibition entitled “Radiance – They Dream in Time” at the Palazzo Palumbo Fossati, curated by Shaheen Merali, a Tanzanian-born, British curator. Merali writes, “the exhibition refers to the essential knowledge and lived experiences of Kerunen and Sekajugo in speaking to the many different territories of Uganda, as well as to urban trade and living conditions in its urban centres,” adding that, “both artists have been actively working with formal and informal archives of Uganda’s dynamic visual culture.” The inaugural Uganda Pavilion at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia marks a historic moment for the country and represents its position and impact on the global art scene. Commissioned by Mme Juliana Akoryo Naumo on behalf of the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, this opportunity was made possible through a partnership between Stjarna.art and the Uganda National Cultural Center (UNCC).
