Founded in 1998 by Shanna McBurney in Downtown San Francisco, Hang Art bridges the gap between artists and collectors by nurturing and growing the careers of talented, undiscovered artists, and expanding the collections of emerging and established collectors. In 2010, long time employee and artist Piero Spadaro purchased the gallery from McBurney, leading Hang Art to become the globally recognized pioneer in the art world that it is today.
Acting as an incubator, Hang Art has launched the careers of dozens of emerging artists using their unique gallery model which was designed to develop the studio practice of each artist and grow their market value. Some of their notable alumni include: John Herschend, Green Renaissance pioneer Josh Keyes, Jylian Gustlin, Marianne Kolb, Yvette Molina, and Siddharth Parasnis.
Hang Art’s mission has always been one of accessibility as they strive to make art collecting as straightforward and transparent as possible. Keeping this in mind, Hang Art has posted art prices clearly and publicly since day one, a practice that to this day, is typically unheard of in the opaque art world. Additionally, the gallery’s revolutionary rental program allows clients to experience living with a specific work in their home without the long term commitment of ownership.
Hang Art scours the San Francisco Bay Area to find exceptional and undiscovered artists, giving their collectors access to a wide variety of the best quality original artwork being produced today, particularly works that collectors would not find on their own or in a blue chip gallery. Hang Art’s atmosphere is welcoming, a place where uninitiated collectors can ask questions without inhibition.
In the Summer of 2020, Hang Art opened a new space in the Fort Mason area of San Francisco. Continuing their mission of accessibility, the two-story, waterfront location has the capacity to be indoor/outdoor and provides a safe and enjoyable environment for those looking to collect by appointment during COVID-19.
With Hang Art, you’ll enjoy the art as much as you enjoy the process of acquiring it.
