Gray Area fosters artistic engagement with our changing digital society. Through our creative and educational programs, we empower communities to be agents of social and civic change. Our mission is to apply art and technology to create social and civic impact through education, incubation, and public events. We use digital tools to create art and design projects that benefit society. We test and scale projects with high impact potential, teach digital tools to support artists and technologists, and inspire our community by promoting meaningful new work. We apply the promise and inspiration of digital art to a broader social context. Our programs are transforming cities into creative outlets, applying technology to solve problems, and shaping how art is created and consumed in the digital era.
Gray Area, established 15 years ago as an alternative art and technology space in San Francisco, sought to strengthen their engagement with their existing community, and to reach a broader art world audience through three campaigns — the opening and inaugural exhibition of the Gray Area Gallery, the annual Gray Area Festival, and a major solo retrospective of Mexican-Canadian artist-technologist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer.
In addition to dedicated exhibition PR for three major exhibitions, A&O PR designed and executed a cultivation campaign to introduce the traditional art world — its collectors, curators, and publications — to Gray Area’s programming in the Bay Area and internationally. This longer-term strategy involved on-site media liaising and relationship building, on-site event support, and a consistent cadence of external institutional communications to art world audiences.
A&O PR implemented a comprehensive PR approach that elevate Gray Area’s profile in the international art world. Over the course of the engagement, A&O PR secured coverage from KQED, Square Cylinder, 48 Hills, Datebook SF, San Francisco Magazine, and a dedicated print review in Artforum.
