Compound Long Beach

ABOUT

Compound is located at the corner of East 14th Street and Coronado Avenue within the thriving Zaferia District of Long Beach. At the intersection of art, culture, and community, this dynamic creative space is centered on the belief that culture shifts consciousness. Inspiring artworks of emerging and intergenerational artists invite guests to explore, discover, and connect. Compound operates as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) entity with public programming, including contemporary art exhibitions and immersive experiences, talks, wellness classes, workshops, community markets, and youth programs. A selection of programs are free and accessible thanks to the generous support of Compound’s partners and funders. Compound welcomes locals, regulars, and new visitors to experience the cultural diversity of its neighborhood.

OPPORTUNITY

Following its pandemic-related closure, Compound Long Beach sought a reputable public agency to announce its reopening along with the appointment of January Parkos Arnall as Executive Director. Compound Long Beach selected A&O PR to represent this key moment due to our strategic expertise in leading communications campaigns for cultural institutions and our deep relationships with local and national arts and culture media. Along with the announcement of their new Executive Director, A&O PR led campaigns for “When the Veil Thins,” a group exhibition curated by Tofer Chin and Mari Orkenyi, the reactivation of Compound’s community and wellness offerings, an exhibition by Fay Ray, and the complete return of the organization’s programmatic pillars.

SOLUTION

Kicking off our engagement with the announcement of Compound’s new Executive Director, A&O PR crafted and led a strategic news release that resulted in exclusive coverage with ARTnews, one of the top publications in the industry. Following that piece, A&O PR moved into a local and national arts and culture campaign, focusing on storytelling around Compound Long Beach’s three programmatic pillars: exhibitions, wellness, and community engagement. As trusted advisers with over 15 years of experience in media relations, messaging, events, and thought leadership, A&O PR advised on campaign elements including talks, dinner series, and previews that would create opportunities for deeper engagement in Compound’s curatorial themes and invite press coverage.

RESULTS

A&O PR’s engagement drove sustained coverage in local and national arts and culture publications, reinforcing Compound Long Beach’s mission and generating broad awareness of the art institution’s exhibitions and offerings. Press placements included Longbeach-ize, Press-Telegram, LAist, Hypebeast, and 13 Things LA.
