Miscellaneous – Palm Springs Modernism Show and Sale – 2012
I got the chance to hang out with Miss Modernism, who was crowned a few months prior at the Denver show before it travelled to Palm Springs. And besides being beautiful in her tiara, she also had a deep knowledge of the Modernism time period, which is really impressive considering how deep the history of the cultural movement goes. We walked around the exhibits discussing the finer points of architecture and design – passing by vintage Cadillacs in pristine condition and even a strange device known as a Dolfin WaterKraft that seemed like some kind of retro-futuristic pool toy. There was a lot to take in at the show, from glass backgammon sets to Jimmy Durante piggy banks, and all of it was staged to look as though it was from the pages of a 1950s issue of Time Magazine. Heck, even the jazz band had a vibraphone player that just kind of took you out of 2012 and into the peak of jazz.
