Art Opening – Jon-Paul Villegas – Weekend Space
I really liked the way Jon-Paul Villegas made many of the sculptures in his solo exhibit, Drift/Gather, at Weekend Space look as if they had been melted in an elegant yet sludgy fire. Jon-Paul told me he that he was able to create that visual effect by layering heavy masses of hot glue, which was already dyed black, onto various objects he finds around his workshop or discovers amongst the isles of Home Depot – a constant place of inspiration ever since he moved next door to one. The one thing I forgot to ask Jon-Paul about at the opening, was whether or not the Snickers bar in one of his sculptures was actually real, but it’s almost more exciting to leave it as a mystery, just like Jon Bernard, who I will have to write about in another post!
