Rob Schrab – Interview
Interview with Rob Schrab
Rob Schrab is the creator of The Sarah Silverman Show, Channel 101, SCUD, Robot Bastard, and so much more. Besides being bald, he’s one of the funnies mother-fuckers alive…literally.
Daniel Rolnik: Does having a shaved head help improve your brainpower?
Rob Schrab: Not really but it does save money (hairspray, combs …do they still make mousse?)
DR: What’s the best joke you’ve heard Sarah Silverman say off camera?
RS: Hmmm. Everything that comes to mind is too inside – I am a fan of her rape jokes. “Fuckin’ Matt Damon” still makes me laugh/jealous.
DR: If you had a budget of 100 billion dollars what would you create?
RS: The cure to AIDS. Then I’d remake “The Green Slime” starring Rob Corddry, Sam Rockwell, Don Glover, Nick Offerman, Lake Bell, Malin Akerman and Nicholas Cage with whatever money’s left over.
DR: Why has it been important to you to work so closely with Dan Harmon?
RS: He’s the funniest person I know and Dan taught me everything about comedy. I didn’t think I was funny until I became friends with Dan.
DR: What are your favorite Japanese monster movies?
RS: Green Slime, Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, The X from Outer Space, it’s not Japanese but The Host is freaking amazing,
DR: What are your favorite things to do before going in to pitch an idea for a TV show?
RS: Jump around to “Neutron Dance” by Pointer Sisters, drink too much Diet Soda, listen to Hypnotherapy and masturbate.
DR: What are your favorite artistic mediums, brands, and tools to use?
RS: I love my Wacom Cintiq, Sharpie pens, cardboard and hot glue. I swear by Final Cut Pro and Photoshop.

DR: When you were asked to write the lyrics to Hugh Jackman’s opening song at the 81st Oscars what was your reaction?
RS: Wow, I get to work with Wolverine? It was especially cool because it was the first time Harmon and I worked together since he left The Sarah Silverman Program. The whole project was quick and exciting. On top of that I won an Emmy; which was also quick and exciting.
DR: Which of the pieces in your personal art collection do you like the most right now?
RS: My favorite art right now is the logo animation I’ve been doing. I’m a big fan of eighties movie studio logos. It’s super fun to try to emulate that pre-CG style and give it a weathered look. It think my favorite was the Freund/Reiter logo I made for my fiancé, Kate’s Channel 101 show “Legend of the White Tiger.”
DR: What releases do you have planned for 2011?
RS: I have my art book But I Can’t Do Anything Else! out right now and this summer the Scud trade is being reprinted with a new cover (really excited about that since I haven’t drawn Scud in a while). Hoping that my schedule will allow me to direct an episode of Harmon’s “Community” as well as another “Parks and Recreation.” In June I have 6 episodes of “Childrens Hospital” for Adult Swim and if you’re in San Francisco May 3-15 go see Hugh Jackman’s one man show at the Curran Theatre, Harmon and I wrote a duet for Hugh and Richard Marx.
