Sarah Stephens Illustration
I love surprises. Not like, “people-hiding-in-closets-wearing-gorilla-costumes- waiting-to-jump-out-and-scare-the-shit-out-of-you” kind of surprises. More like the Sarah Stephens kind of surprise where she shows you something you weren’t quite expecting.
When I took a look at her work, I was drawn to the images of antiquated diner, liquor store, and motel signage. They harken to a suburban Los Angeles car culture all too familiar with these sorts of stop-offs that surround the freeway exits, laying in wait to house the next weary traveler. But when I learned the Southern Caliornia based illustrator painted these beauties on matchbooks and cigarette boxes, I believe I let out an audible exclammation of surprise. Super cool, Sarah Stephens. Well done.
