Studio Visit With Jane Kim: Part II
I took a jaunt down to the San Francisco Recycling & Disposal center to visit Jane Kim who is their newest Artist in Residence (AIR). She showed me around the amazing space and let me have a sneak preview of some of the pieces she’s creating for her upcoming show there. Take a look at what she has in progress but be sure to see them in person at the opening on May 15th & 16th. Utilizing materials such as sheet rock, wood, wallpaper, and linoleum, Jane’s work explores the nature of walls from an anthropological perspective. She sees the wall as a space to personalize and a surface for decoration that communicates a culturally specific language intrinsic to the choice of symbols and patterns used.
I love the pattern of the linoleum she salvaged and how she inlaid the wood star.
I’m super impressed with her newly acquired wood-working skills. This is a finished piece for her show and I think it really shows some inspired new techniques.
Another finished piece for her upcoming show. The painted oval shapes are a recent element of Jane’s work that is quickly becoming a signature. The shape is inspired by this drafting tool:
A close-up of a larger piece, I wanted to show the texture of these bits of wood. I love the pattern they make.
A responsibility of all AIR artists is to host tour groups that come through to see the Recycling & Disposal center. Jane had some of the kids who have stopped through during her residency sign this piece of drywall which she’ll later incorporate into a work of art.
Big thank you to Jane for showing me around!
